Educational precepts contained in the Rule of Augustine of Hippo: a project for community life
Keywords:
history of education, educational precepts, middle ages, Augustine´s ruleAbstract
This article will reflect on the precepts presented in the Rule of Augustine (354/430 AD), noting that its educational proposal extends beyond monastic life, offering principles applicable to the whole of society. The Regula ad servos Dei constitutes a set of precepts, made up of eight chapters, intended to regulate the life of monks in monasteries, constituting a mirror, that is, a rule of life to be followed. To maintain harmony within the community of monks, we can consider that Augustine proposes a philosophy of life for this group, based on love, the sharing of goods, a common life, sober living, the practice of chastity, prayer, and detachment from earthly goods. The Rule presents a series of advice and guides that some virtues be practiced in the religious community so that it may draw closer to God and to one's neighbor. In order to regulate the behavior and actions of monks and neutralize behaviors that could harm life in monasteries, Augustine makes these recommendations. The bishop of Hippo, linked to his time, proposes rules to be followed, which makes us reflect, in our time, on our actions as educators and researchers. In this sense, we are guided by the perspective of social history with a view to the long term.
