Abstract

The purpose of the essay is to reflect on peasant agriculture in the context of the crisis generated by Covid-19 in Paraguay. It is argued that the effect of the pandemic on peasant agriculture has other connotations and characteristics because it is an autonomous activity, developed within the family and whose main purpose is the production of food. This being its characteristic, it was not only able to withstand the crisis better but at the same time it contributed to partially alleviate the lack of food for residents of urban neighbourhoods in various municipalities of the country. The pandemic makes visible the relevance of peasant agriculture as a producer of diversified food and at the same time reinforces the importance of the land as a factor of production and reproduction of life. It is to be expected that this crisis as a result of Covid-19 will modify the perception and vision of peasant agriculture as something residual and that public policies consider it as a fundamental component of national food security and sovereignty.
