Abstract

Cyanobacterial blooms occur in eutrophic aquatic environments mainly due to the lack of proper management of water resources and their pollutants. In the case of Paraguay, two red blooms have been reported, one in the Western Region (P1) and the other in the Eastern Region (P2). Therefore, the objective was to identify the causative microorganism and the physicochemical conditions in which they developed. In both cases, the genus Cyanotetras (Cyanobacteria) was identified as the most abundant with a density of 1,065,000 cells/mL (P1) and 5,504,000 cells/mL (P2). Regarding the physicochemical parameters, they reported a high concentration
of nutrients and salts was reported, characteristic of eutrophied and brackish aquatic ecosystems. In conclusion, we can indicate that in P1 the flowering occurred naturally, while in P2 it was due to the contribution of pollutants from anthropic activities near the body of water.
