The genus Paspalum comprises more than 330 native American species, which are of great interest due to their forage quality and the wide range of ecological adaptability. Paraguay has little information on the cytology of native species of the genus. In order to contribute to the characterization of native plants from Paraguay, the ploidy level of 24 individuals from 13 accessions belonging to eight Paspalum species has been determined using cytogenetic techniques and flow cytometry. The botanical collections were made in the Canindeyú, Central, Cordillera, Paraguarí, and Pte. Hayes departments. Most (96%) of the studied species were tetraploid. The accessions of P. almum (2n = 4x = 24), P. ionanthum, P. malacophyllum, P. notatum var. notatum, P. nicorae and P. plicatulum were tetraploids (2n = 4x = 40), whereas P. arundinellum was pentaploid (2n = 5x = 50) and P. simplex was diploid (2n = 2x = 20).
