Abstract

In order to establish the incidence and distribution of termite populations on native grassland (Paspalum notatum L.) production, cattle farms and their surroundings were examined in Itacurubi del Rosario, department of San Pedro, Paraguay; using the GPS nest location method (Garmin Map 76 CSx), drones, capture of aerial photographs and then the evaluation of the incidence and distribution of termite nests per hectare. Maps of incidence and distribution of nests were made for a surface of seven hectares. From the data generated, a map with the distribution of active termite nests was prepared using the QGIS software version 3.18. The formation of termite mounds represented an average area of 12 m² and an intensity of 13.5% per hectare, distributed in an average of 96.2 nests per hectare, totaling some 8,085 termite nests within the study area for a total area of 7 ha. Examples of species were represented by the family: Termitidae (Cornitermes cumulans, Nasutitermes nigriceps and Termes sp.) of wide distribution in the study area. The presence of termite mounds negatively affects the useful productive area due to the occupied area and a significant loss of pasture per day to feed the animals in each season of the year.
