Abstract
Background: The menstrual cycle involves interactions between the central nervous system, the uterus and the ovaries. The ovary comprises two recognisable phases, follicular and luteal. During the menstrual cycle a person experiences hormonal changes that can cause physical, psychological and behavioural symptoms. Negative symptoms around the menstrual cycle are among the most frequent disorders in the female population of childbearing age.
Methodology: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. Aimed at women of childbearing age aged 18-40 years. It was carried out using a Google-Forms form on demographic characteristics, menstrual cycle characteristics, depression scale (PHQ2) and anxiety scale (GAD-7).
Results: The final sample consisted of 358 individuals. According to the findings, the percentage of anxiety symptoms assessed reached 80.3%. Among them, 57.63% were in the luteal phase and 42.37% in the follicular phase. As for individuals with probable depression, a percentage of 47.5% was identified. Among these, 61.17% were in the luteal phase and 38.83% in the follicular phase.
Conclusion: A statistically significant association was identified between depression and the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle in females from the general population of Paraguay. The OR or relative risk of depression in the luteal phase is 1.5 times.
