To ensure animal welfare on farms, having a standardized protocol that is practical, flexible, and allows for the evaluation of welfare parameters across different operations has been essential. Regular self-assessment of farms through a standardized protocol has helped monitor welfare and provide early indicators to identify issues that may have impacted health and production. This study aimed to evaluate welfare parameters in family farms of laying hens in the Central Department of Paraguay, using the animal welfare protocol from the AssureWel project. The implementation of this protocol for animal welfare assessment promoted the use of welfare outcome assessment in other production assurance schemes, in addition to suggesting the use of welfare labels for laying hens based on the production method. Likewise, the goal was to contribute to improving the quality of life for laying hens.
