Peer Review Process

Manuscripts submitted to Memorias del Instituto de Investigaciones en Ciencias de la Salud undergo a double-blind peer review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the evaluation. Each manuscript is assessed by a minimum of two external reviewers with expertise in the relevant subject area, who are given a period of 30 days to submit their evaluation. Reviewers assess the originality, methodological rigor, scientific relevance, and clarity of presentation of each work. Based on the reviewers' reports, the Editorial Committee decides whether to accept, request revisions, or reject the manuscript, and communicates the decision to the authors as promptly as possible. This process ensures impartiality, transparency, and the scientific quality of published articles.

Abstract

The placenta, embryologically, comes from the trophoblast, an external cell mass. After delivery, it is considered biological waste whose management is the responsibility of the hospital. Nowadays, placental membranes are used as biological material to treat ulcerated lesions and moderate-to-deep burns. In a clinical case, a male pediatric patient suffered scalding burns with grade AB-B and B lesions in various areas of the body, such as the hypogastrium, perineum, genital area, thighs, buttocks, dorsal area and lower limbs. The burned surface was 40% according to Benaim. Given the extent of the lesions and lack of tissue, treatment with placental membrane was chosen as temporary coverage. This approach was effective for the patient's recovery, accompanied by hydration and antibiotics. This article presents an innovative provisional healing technique using biological placental membrane dressing for extensive burns.
