Evaluation of the medical and non-medical programming of the Calvo Mackenna Hospital year 2022-2023

Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the medical and non-medical scheduling of the Calvo Mackenna Hospital (HLCM) during 2022 and 2023, identifying qualitative and quantitative factors that impact it and comparing the process with the other two pediatric hospitals in the Metropolitan Region. A mixed methodology was applied, using historical quantitative data and qualitative questionnaires administered to key stakeholders.

Surveys at the Roberto del Río and Exequiel González Cortés hospitals concurred on the importance of scheduling as a management tool. They identified the lack of specialists and absenteeism as problems and highlighted the need for monthly monitoring (production, performance, and waiting list). They also indicated the need for greater flexibility in the Ministry's guidelines for pediatric centers.

At the HLCM, the key factors include infrastructure, performance, contracted hours, services provided, waiting list, and no-shows. Quantitative data show an increase in the gap (difference between supply and demand) in 2023. The waiting list grew significantly: 35% for specialists and 49% for surgeries between 2022 and 2023. The results suggest the need to develop an administrative guideline for the scheduling process. By adjusting supply to reflect reality based on these factors, it is possible to precisely determine the gap between supply and demand, leading to better management and monitoring of resource efficiency for continuous improvement in access to care.
