Abstract

Backround: Neonatal sepsis is a serious infection that affects newborns and can have significant complications. The clinical presentation can be non-specific, which makes timely diagnosis and treatment difficult.

Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of neonatal sepsis in a tertiary hospital through a retrospective observational study.

Materials and Methods: The study is observational, descriptive, and retrospective, and medical records of all newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital de Clínicas del Paraguay during January 2021 to December 2022 were analyzed. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling of consecutive cases will be used, and privacy and confidentiality of obtained data will be ensured.

Results: The study registered 270 live births admitted to the Hospital de Clínicas del Paraguay, of which 38 (14.07%) presented neonatal sepsis. In 2021 and 2022, 22 (14.6%) and 16 (13.3%) cases of neonatal sepsis were recorded, respectively. Associated comorbidities included cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and metabolic diseases. The most common treatment was a combination of ampicillin and gentamicin.

Conclusion: The research found a moderate incidence of neonatal sepsis in the Hospital de Clínicas del Paraguay, with the majority of cases registered in male patients. The most common comorbidities were metabolic and respiratory diseases, and most cases were of early-onset neonatal sepsis. Implementation of preventive measures such as promotion of breastfeeding and aseptic practices is suggested.
