Abstract

Background: Chronic fatigue and fatigue are common phenomena in academic and professional medical settings, and can have significant consequences for both the well-being of students and the quality of medical care they provide
in the future.
Materials and Methods: This was an observational, descriptive, cross-association, prospective study with non-probabilistic convenience sampling that included university students in Paraguay. The Modified Fatigue Impact Scale
(MIFS) was used to assess the physical and cognitive impact of fatigue in medical students.
Results: The sample consisted of 130 undergraduate students. Mean age 24.70 years, 59.2% female. Significant positive correlations were found between physical fatigue and depression (r=0.553, p=0.00), as well as between physical fatigue and anxiety (r=0.603, p=0.00). Similarly, positive and significant correlations were found between cognitive fatigue and depression
(r=0.648, p=0.00), and between cognitive fatigue and anxiety (r=0.711, p=0.00).
Conclusion: The high levels of anxiety and depression, together with the presence of physical and cognitive fatigue, highlight the importance of implementing mental health promotion strategies in the university setting.
