Agrarian issue in Brazil: the battle between agribusiness and agroecology

Abstract

This work aims to problematize the Brazilian agrarian reality and its contemporary manifestation materialized in what is conventionally called agribusiness. The agribusiness-based productive model is dependent on the policy adopted by the military governments from the mid-1960s onwards, but matures in the 1990s with the hegemony of neoliberalism and has significantly advanced the destruction of natural resources such as land, water, forests etc. In counterpoint to this model, a new productive model has been constituted that points out ways to preserve nature and all life forms. Agroecology becomes the strategy of resistance of various social organizations and movements and turns to the production of healthy products, thereby ensuring the principle of food sovereignty. The MST, which in its origin adopts the productive matrix arising from the Green Revolution, from the 2000s has become one of the major references in the defense of agroecology considering it a strategy of resistance against agribusiness and defense of Food Sovereignty.
