Article Types

Anales de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas considers the following manuscript categories. Word limits exclude the title page, abstract, references, tables, figures, legends, and supplementary material. The editorial team may authorize duly justified exceptions.

Original Article

Reports unpublished findings from scientific research. It must be organized into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion.

  • Up to 4,500 words.
  • Structured abstract of up to 250 words.
  • Up to six tables or figures in total.
  • Relevant, current, and verified references.
  • Compliance with the reporting guideline corresponding to the study design.

Observational cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies must follow STROBE. Randomized clinical trials must follow CONSORT. Other study designs must follow the corresponding international reporting guideline when available.

Compliance with a reporting guideline supports complete and transparent reporting but does not replace the assessment of the study’s methodological quality.

Case Report

Describes a clinically relevant case because of its diagnostic, therapeutic, educational, prognostic, or patient-safety significance.

  • Up to 2,500 words.
  • Abstract of up to 200 words.
  • Up to four tables or figures in total.
  • Relevant references, preferably up to 25.
  • Specific consent for publication.
  • Compliance with the CARE guideline.

The manuscript must protect the patient’s identity and clearly describe the clinical information, intervention, course, and main lessons derived from the case.

Literature Review

Provides a critical and updated synthesis of the literature on a clearly defined topic or question. The review method must be identified in the manuscript.

  • Up to 5,000 words.
  • Abstract of up to 250 words.
  • Tables and figures as required.
  • Relevant, sufficient, and current references.

The manuscript must state the objective, sources consulted, search period, terms used, and general criteria for selecting the literature.

When the manuscript is a systematic review or meta-analysis, it must present a reproducible methodology and comply with PRISMA and its applicable extensions.

Topic of Interest

Presents updates, specialized analyses, innovations, academic experiences, or evidence-based reflections relevant to the health sciences.

  • Up to 3,500 words.
  • Abstract of up to 200 words.
  • Up to four tables or figures in total.
  • Relevant references, preferably up to 40.

The manuscript must have a clearly defined objective and distinguish the available scientific evidence from the authors’ interpretation or opinion.

Letter to the Editor

Provides scientific comments on articles published in the journal or on matters relevant to its editorial scope.

  • Up to 1,000 words.
  • No abstract required.
  • Up to one table or figure.
  • Up to 10 references.

Letters concerning an article published in Anales de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas should preferably be submitted within six months of publication. Letters are subject to editorial assessment and may be sent to the authors of the cited article for a right of reply.

Editorial

Presents a position, analysis, or reflection on a scientific, academic, health-related, or editorial topic relevant to the journal. Editorials are generally commissioned by the editorial team.

  • No abstract required.
  • Up to one table or figure.
  • Up to 15 references.

Authorship, conflicts of interest, and funding sources must be disclosed in accordance with the journal’s policies.

All manuscripts are subject to editorial assessment and compliance with the applicable authorship, ethics, conflict-of-interest, funding, data-availability, and artificial-intelligence policies. The assessment process may vary according to the manuscript category.
