This editorial proposes redefining academic merit at the National University of Asunción through a model based on verifiable intellectual and scientific production. It criticizes the closed academic career ladder, promotion based mainly on seniority, and practices such as institutional endogamy, nepotism and political favoritism. The author proposes a competitive system that would allow the most productive academics to apply for higher-ranking positions regardless of age or length of service, using the quantity and quality of publications as the primary evaluation criteria.
