ntroduction: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) frequently modifies the hemogram, not only at the beginning but in the advance phase too, and could affect one, two or three series.
Objetive: To determine the alterations of the hemogram in AIDS patients
Materials and methods: There hemogram of the AIDS patients who were present at PRONASIDA have been analized from June 2005 to June 2006. The hemograms were done with automatic counters and the differential white blood cell counts manually. To determinate the presence of anaemia the reference value has been < 13 g/dl in males and < 12 g/dl in females. Anaemias were classified following haematimetric indices. Leukopenia was considered < 5000 leukocytes per mm3, Lymphopenia was considered < 1000 lymphocytes per mm3. Thrombocytopenia was considered < 150.000 platelets per mm3 and thrombocitosis >400.000 per mm3.
Results: 186 hemograms of AIDS patients were analized: 59% males and 41% females, with an average age of 32. The 87% of these have shown some cytopenias: 83% anaemia, 40% leukopenia with lymphopenia. Less than 10%: leucocytosis with neutrophilia and leucocytosis with lymphocytosis. Thrombocytopenic 8% and Pancytopenia was present in 4% the patients.
Conclution: A high proportion of the hemograms from AIDS patients show some cytopenias, affecting one, two or three series.
