Purpose: To determine the intraocular pressure (IOP) change after cataract extraction and justify the use of oral IOP-lowering drugs as prophylaxis for IOP spikes.
Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in 51 patients having cataract surgery in the Catedra de Oftalmologia, FCM, UNA. The IOP was measured 2, 4 and 24 hours after cataract surgery with Goldmann applanation tonometer.
Results: The IOP range from 4 to 33 mmHg. The mean IOP at 2 hrs was 14.94 ± 5.62 mmHg, at 4 hrs 16.66 ± 6.55 mmHg and at 24 hrs 15.60 ± 6.10 mmHg. We did not find IOP spikes over 35 mmHg.
Conclusion: The pattern of IOP change after cataract surgery showed mean normal IOP, with an initial small rise at 4 hours followed by a fall at 24 hours, with no statistical difference. We did not find IOP spikes that justify a routine prophylaxis with IOP-lowering agents.
