Abstract

Purpose: To determine the anti-inflammatory effect of subconjunctival dexamethasone injection after cataract surgery.

Methods: One hundred and forty patients having cataract surgery (78 ECCE; 62 PHACO) were randomized into 2 groups. One group (A) received subconjunctival injection of dexamethasone and the other group did not (group B). Anterior chamber reaction was measured in day 1 and 8 postoperatively.

Results: At day 1, anterior chamber reaction in group A was $2.08+$ and group B $2.35+$ ($p = 0.096$). At day 8 group A was $0.96+$ and B $1.06+$ ($p = 0.936$).

Conclusion: A subconjunctival injection tends to reduce the anterior chamber reaction, but there is not a significant difference in between the two groups. Even thou, ECCE surgeries with subconjunctival dexamethasone injection in day 1 have a significant difference ($p = 0.001$).
