Peer Review Process

Manuscripts submitted to Memorias del Instituto de Investigaciones en Ciencias de la Salud undergo a double-blind peer review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the evaluation. Each manuscript is assessed by a minimum of two external reviewers with expertise in the relevant subject area, who are given a period of 30 days to submit their evaluation. Reviewers assess the originality, methodological rigor, scientific relevance, and clarity of presentation of each work. Based on the reviewers' reports, the Editorial Committee decides whether to accept, request revisions, or reject the manuscript, and communicates the decision to the authors as promptly as possible. Abstract

Child nutrition is a fundamental pillar for growth and overall development. Adequate nutritional status is associated with a stronger immune system, a lower incidence of infectious and non-communicable diseases, improved school performance, and a better quality of life. The objective of this study was to describe the nutritional status and the most frequent medical diagnoses among children aged 6 to 11 years who attended the Itá District Hospital in 2024. An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted. The study population consisted of the medical records of children of both sexes, aged 6 to 11 years, who attended the Pediatric Department of the Itá District Hospital during 2024. A systematic probability sampling method was used, and all medical records meeting the inclusion criteria were included. Among the patients, 53.93% were between 6 and 8 years of age, 53.39% were female, and 76.15% lived in rural areas. The most frequent medical diagnosis was acute rhinopharyngitis (22.49%). Regarding nutritional status, 23.03% of the children were overweight, while 1.36% had moderate malnutrition. Among children with moderate malnutrition, intestinal parasitosis was the most frequent diagnosis (60.0%), whereas acute rhinopharyngitis was the most common diagnosis among children with obesity (28.79%). In conclusion, among children aged 6 to 11 years treated at the Itá District Hospital during 2024, acute rhinopharyngitis was the most frequent medical diagnosis, and overweight was the most prevalent nutritional disorder.
