Abstract

People deprived of liberty are susceptible to the formation of caries and periodontal infections due to confinement. The objective of the study was to determine the oral health status of women deprived of liberty at the Casa del Bun Pastor Penitentiary Center, Asunción, Paraguay in November 2021. The study was descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional. It was carried out by dentistry students from the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the Universidad del Norte. It included women deprived of their liberty in the Casa del Buen Pastor Penitentiary Center in Asunción-Paraguay, over 18 years of age, with informed consent and residence for more than 6 months in the detention center. The sociodemographic variables were recorded in a dental clinical record written according to the objectives outlined in the research work through surveys. Educational sessions were held to promote and prevent oral health. Of the 193 women deprived of liberty surveyed and inspected, 33 (17%) were over 50 years of age, the rest were young people between 18 and 40 years of age. They came from Greater Asunción 102 (53%), 59 (31%) had secondary education and 6 (3%) tertiary education. Most of the examined women presented decayed, missing and filled teeth (CPO); 123 (64%) had high CPO index, 54 (28%) regular and 15 (8%) low. Alterations in periodontal tissues, such as gingival enlargement, recessions, mucosal stains, ulcers, and fistulas, were observed.
