Evaluation of a university extension intervention on knowledge about breast cancer prevention among women in Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay

Breast cancer is a major public health problem due to its high incidence and mortality, especially in settings with limited access to early detection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a community-based educational intervention on breast cancer prevention knowledge in a population from Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay. A quantitative, quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest design in a single group was conducted with a sample of 65 participants selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The intervention included educational, awareness, and training activities on breast self-examination. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire applied before and after the intervention, assessing knowledge of risk factors, warning signs, and preventive measures. The results showed an increase in knowledge across all evaluated items, reaching 95.4% of participants with an adequate level in the posttest. It is concluded that the educational intervention had a positive impact, highlighting the role of university extension as an effective strategy for health promotion.
