Abstract
Background: Neonatal depression is a neurological disorder that affects newborns and is characterised by the presence of signs
and symptoms such as hypotonia, respiratory difficulties, bradycardia, cyanosis, among others.
Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of neonatal depression in a tertiary level hospital in Paraguay, through a retrospective study of the years 2021 and 2022.
Methodology: Observational, descriptive and retrospective study with neonatal medical records from the Hospital de Clínicas del Paraguay, from January 2021 to December 2022. Non-probabilistic sampling of consecutive cases. Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of neonates with neonatal depression were described,
including gestational age, birth weight, risk factors, treatment received and neonatal outcomes.
Results: 95 cases of neonatal depression were collected between 2021 and 2022. Predominance of the female sex with
48 cases and 46 of the male sex. Mean hospital stay was 6.7±7 days, with a mean birth weight of 2774.2±839 kilograms and
a mean gestational age of 36.3±3.5 weeks. It was found that 15 neonates were discharged due to orbito, while 79 neonates
showed improvement.
Conclusion: The results show that neonatal depression is more frequent in infants of lower gestational age and birth weight,
with a high prevalence of respiratory, metabolic and neurological comorbidities. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive assessment and specialised management in these vulnerable patients.
