Abstract
Background: Smoking is currently the world’s leading cause of preventable death; for its part, stress is the physical or mental response to an external cause, such as having many tasks or suffering from an illness. Anxiety is a natural adaptive mechanism that allows us to become alert to compromising events.
Methods: An analytical, cross-sectional, observational study will be conducted from March to April 2022. Paraguayan nationals over 18 years of age were included in the study; electronic cigarette smokers were excluded. The sample was selected through non-probabilistic techniques, by convenience. The PSS-6 perceived stress questionnaire was used. The GAD-7 questionnaire was used to measure anxiety in students.
Results: It was found that 70.7% of the sample corresponds to the female sex, in the same way 46.6% affirms to reside in the central department. 12.9% are smokers, while 9.5% of the participants claim to be ex-smokers. Regarding the stress variable, it is described that 52.6% of the surveyed sample perceive stress in their daily life and 44.8% are categorized with anxiety.
Conclusion: A significant relationship was found between smoking, stress and anxiety, among which stress with 52.6% is more prevalent than anxiety which showed a percentage of 44.8%.
