Abstract

Background: According to the World Health Organization, headaches make frequent disorders in the general population. Migraine is a type of headache that is manifested by pulsatile pain at presentation, moderate and severe intensity, associated with nausea, vomiting and susceptibility to light, sounds and smells. The objective of this investigation was to determine the prevalence of migraine in students of Medicine of the National University of Asuncion in September-October in 2016.
Methods: An observational, analytical transverse cut study. To establish the diagnosis of migraine we used as an instrument the questionnaire ‘Alcoi-95’, and the criteria for the diagnosis of migraine of the International Society of Headaches (IHS).
Results: We surveyed 146 subjects of which 70% were women and 30% were man. The average age was 21.58 ± 1.34. 52% of the population belonged to the third course. 44% refer a family history of migraine. The overall prevalence of migraine was 41%, being higher in the first year (75%) and in the Group of 20 to 22 years. The migraine was significantly associated (p<0.05) with consumption of canned food, studying the first year of the career, having insomnia, last month of academic year and, stress before evaluations.
Conclusion: Migraine is a prevalent disease in the medical students of basic sciences, especially in the first year. It was found to be associated with stress at the exams, insomnia, consumption of canned food, last months of academic period, and, studying the first year of the career.
