Abstract

Background: Depression affects affection, cognition, behavior and somatic life. Crocus sativus known as well as saffron could have a similar efficacy compared to fluoxetine and imipramine in the treatment of depression. The aim was to study the antidepressant effects of saffron in Swiss albino mice with the tail suspension test.
Methods: Experimental, parallel groups, triple blind, with previous and posterior tests. It was carried out in Asuncion – Paraguay, in the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Asuncion. The study was held from April to October 2017. The tail suspension test was applied to 16 mice randomly assigned to 4 groups: a) Experimental Group no. 1 (saffron alcoholic extract with 40 mg/kg), b) Experimental Group no. 2 (saffron alcoholic extract with 80 mg/kg), c) Fluoxetine Group (10 mg/kg), d) Placebo Group. Student’s t test was used for means comparison, p<0.05 as significative.
Results: The means of immobility latency were: a) Placebo Group: 1.4 ± 0.4 s, b) Fluoxetine Group: 1.1 ± 0.07 s, c) Experimental Group no. 1: 1.4 ± 0, 3 s, d) Experimental Group no. 2: 1.7 ± 0.7 s.
Conclusion: The administration of alcoholic extract of saffron, showed reduction of depressive behavior in the tail suspension test.
