Abstract

Background:

Hypokalemic muscle paralysis secondary to the consumption of sugary cola-type beverages is an unusual clinical presentation, however, we must consider them as differential diagnoses for adequate therapeutic management.

The case:

A 24-year-old male patient presented for weakness of the lower limbs caused by hypokalemia of unknown etiology in principle. Carrying out an exhaustive anamnesis and multiple complementary studies ruling out more frequent causes, the only triggering factor is the intake of more than 3 liters of sugary cola-type drinks per day, a cause of little-known hypokalemia, as it leads us to the differential diagnosis.

Conclusion:

Hypokalemic muscular paralysis is a rare entity, so we consider it important to make this case known in the face of the increase in consumption of this type of beverages, in order to carry out an adequate diagnosis and treatment.
