Abstract

The authors, Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo, economics researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Techonnology (MIT) who were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics, have conducted fieldwork on poverty for many years with various NGOs and also with government officials in several countries.
Rethinking Poverty makes an assessment of poverty alleviation policies and goes further by collecting the experience of the poor, not only that relating to their impressions of governmental and non-governmental programs but that nested in the very economic lives of the poor, so that it reaches very different conclusions from those commonly held.
