Abstract

This study explores the reality of informal employment in the Argentina-Paraguay-Brazil Triple Border Area, focusing on paseros as a paradigmatic case of the precariat. Using an in-depth interview, the analysis is grounded in Weberian stratification, Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, and Giddens’ structuration theory. Findings suggest that informality is not merely a subsistence strategy but a mechanism that reproduces social inequality, anchoring paseros in highly vulnerable positions. The study demonstrates how state absence, stigmatization, and rigid social mobility perpetuate this precarity, despite the notable agency and solidarity developed by these workers. The research concludes by highlighting the urgent need for public policies that address informality as a matter of social justice and promote the inclusion of this vulnerable population.
