Abstract

Introduction: Social media platforms have increasingly promoted thin body ideals, linking them with notions of success. Consequently, this trend has led to elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and increased rates of body dissatisfaction.

Objective: To analyze the association between comparing one's physical appearance via social media and body dissatisfaction.

Materials and Methods: This was an observational, analytical cross-sectional study utilizing convenience sampling conducted from September 20 to October 4, 2022, among medical students at the National University of Asunción. Statistical analysis employed the Kruskal-Wallis test, with a significance level set at p<0.005.

Results: The study included a predominance of female participants (66.3%) with a mean age of 23.11±2.62 years. The mean BMI was 24.10±3.93. A statistically significant association was found between comparing the physical appearance of individuals followed on social media and body dissatisfaction among students (p=0.00001).

Conclusion: This study highlights that comparing physical appearance via social media significantly contributes to feelings of body dissatisfaction.
