Abstract

Background: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) is a severe clinical condition affecting preterm infants and sometimes those born at term. It is characterised by a decrease in pulmonary surfactant production or function.

Objective: To characterise neonatal respiratory distress syndrome in a tertiary hospital in Paraguay through a retrospective study of the years 2021 and 2022.

Materials and Methods: The study was observational and descriptive, with a retrospective approach. We reviewed records of neonatal patients admitted to the Hospital de Clínicas del Paraguay. Non-probabilistic sampling of consecutive cases, including all medical records of neonates diagnosed with RDS.

Results: During the study period in 2021, 35 were diagnosed with Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (NRDS) and in 2022, 33 cases of NRDS were registered. The mean birth weight of these neonates was 2374.71 kilograms and the mean gestational age was 34.3 weeks. The reason for discharge was mainly due to improvement in 53 cases, while 15 cases were discharged due to death.

Conclusion: The incidence of cases was 7%; the most frequent comorbidities were metabolic and neurological; surfactant was the treatment of choice and the type of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) in a specific population of neonates was Hyaline Membrane Disease.
