Abstract
Background: Motorcycle traffic accidents are an important public health problem in Paraguay, and represent the third cause of death. The objective of this project is to describe the epidemiological characteristics of fatal victims of motorcycle accidents who attended a Trauma Center.
Methods: Descriptive observational design. 84 fatal victims who attended the Emergency Medical Center during 2014 were included. Incomplete medical records were excluded.
Results: 84.5% of the victims were male, from the Central Department and the Capital in 42.8% of the cases. The month with the highest percentage of fatal accidents was May, with 14.3%. 50% of accidents occurred between Saturday and Sunday. The most frequent lesion was the cranium-encephalic, reaching 86.9%.
Conclusion: It was found that the majority was young adults, male and single civil status, hospital admissions were more frequent on weekends at night and almost 9 out of 10 victims had cranioencephalic lesions.
