Introduction: Studying the type of transportation and travel time of students is crucial to their academic performance because it influences their ability to arrive on time for classes, exams, and other activities, which in turn directly impacts their performance and motivation to learn. Reliable and efficient transportation a-llows students to concentrate on their studies without the added stress of delays or difficulties in arriving on time. This study describes the type of transportation and travel time students spend to get to the School of Medical Sciences, and how it relates to their academic performance.
Materials and methods: observational,descriptive and cross-sectional. 123 students were interviewed through a semi-structured anonymous digital Likert-type survey, applied in October and November 2024.
Results: Of the 123 respondents, 56 (45.5%) use public transportation, 36 (29.3%) use their own vehicle, 21 (17.1%) walk and 10 (8.1%) use mobile applications. Regarding commuting time and extracurricular activities 57.7% (n=71) state that they limit their extracurricular activities, 25.2% (n=31) do not think so and 17.1% (n=21) responded that sometimes. With respect to academic performance 68.3% (n=84) affirm that it influences study hours, 17.1% (n=21) say it does not and 14.6% (n=18) say sometimes.
Conclusion: the most used type of transportation is public, with 45.5%, followed by their own vehicle with 29.3%; they perceive that the time they invest in the transfer affects their sleep and study hours. 57.7% of the students believe that the time spent on transportation affects their academic activities.
