Knowledge and Performance of Nursing Staff on the aspect management of expressed breast milk at the Villa Elisa Hospital, 2023

Abstract

In the introduction, the importance of constantly reinforcing safety and hygiene rules and regulations is highlighted by the Human Milk Bank, as well as the need to identify unsafe practices and conditions to ensure effective and safe handling of breast milk. The objective of the study was to indicate the knowledge and performance of the nursing staff in the aseptic handling of expressed breast milk at the Hospital de Villa Elisa during the year 2023.The methodology used was of an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional design, with a quantitative approach. The study was carried out at the Villa Elisa Hospital, with a population of 36 nursing professionals. The results show that 39% of the personnel belong to the age group of 30 to 39 years, and 86% are women. Regarding the academic degree, 72% are university students. In relation to knowledge about the aseptic handling of expressed breast milk at the Villa Elisa Hospital, it was found that 58% of the nursing staff know it, while 42% do not. Regarding performance, 81% of the nursing staff performed adequately in the aseptic handling of milk, while 19% presented inadequate performance.In conclusion, most of the nursing staff at the Villa Elisa Hospital show good knowledge and performance in the aseptic handling of expressed breast milk.
