This article examines the Theory of Social Movements, through the theoretical proposals of three of its most important exponents: Charles Tilly, Sidney Tarrow and Alberto Melucci. The text conceptualizes social movements and delves into their characteristics and main elements; among them the leadership process, collective identity, ideology, and its relationship with democratic and non-democratic political systems. Based on the postulates of each author studied here, it is possible to understand the evolution of social movements and their presence in contemporary societies.
