Knowledge about gestational diabetes in pregnant women who attend public hospitals in the Central Department of Paraguay

Abstract

Introduction: It is estimated that worldwide one in seven pregnant women may suffer from hyperglycemia and that 85% of the cases correspond to gestational diabetes, but in many cases gestational diabetes is not diagnosed due to lack of knowledge about the disease. The objective was to evaluate the level of knowledge about gestational diabetes in pregnant women attending public hospitals in the Central Department of Paraguay.
Method: a cross-sectional analytical observational study was carried out. A survey of knowledge about gestational diabetes was carried out in 151 pregnant women attending public hospitals in the central department. The data were loaded into an Excel database and analyzed by applying the descriptive for qualitative variables frequency and mean or median for quantitative variables depending on the normality of the sample. For the analysis of the hypothesis, the 95% confidence level was taken into account, statistical significance p<0.05, and the Chi2 test was applied. Epiinfo 7.2 and Epidat 4.2 were used.
Results: A survey was carried out in public hospitals of the central department with 151 pregnant women, measuring the knowledge of risk factors, maternal-fetal complications, treatment and prevention related to GD by means of a survey that was elaborated and validated.
Conclusion: There is a medium level of knowledge about gestational diabetes among pregnant women, and no statistically significant associations were found in our population.
