Abstract

Introduction: The current COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it a radical change in day to day activities, these changes drag with them a variety of consequences for our society, and medical students are no exception to this rule.

Objective: to describe the psychological alterations in medical students from different universities in the country, as a consequence of the current pandemic and confinement.

Materials and Methods: cross-sectional descriptive observational study design. The population studied are medical students who are studying from the second to the fourth year of the career, in different universities of Paraguay during 2022, an online survey was conducted, through an invitation made via WhatsApp; a non-probabilistic snowball sampling was performed, the variables studied were demographic, geographic characteristics, and psychological alterations.

Results: Vulnerability to depression as a symptom was present in 44.44% of the population, probable anxiety was found in 72.73%, stress presented positive values in 67.68% of the total population surveyed, while suicidal ideation was presented by 20 out of 99 respondents, being the female sex the predominant in all of them.

Conclusion: Most of the medical students did not present depression or suicidal ideation, but they did show a greater tendency to develop anxiety and stress.
