Abstract

Introduction: electronic cigarettes are battery-powered devices used to inhale vapor that usually contain nicotine. They are used as an alternative to smoking cessation, but have been questioned for their health risks.

Objectives: to describe the prevalence and profile of electronic cigarette use in the young Paraguayan population in the Central Department in 2022

Materials and methods: this is a cross-sectional descriptive observational study of young people aged 14 to 25 years in rural and urban areas this year. The type of sampling used is non-probabilistic by convenience since the individuals were selected based on their accessibility, personal criteria and the researchers‘ own intentionality.

Results: of a total of 59 young people surveyed in the Central Department of Paraguay, 33 were women (55.9%), with an average age of 21 (SD ± 1.62) years, aged between 15 and 24 years. The prevalence of smokers was 66% (39/59) of whom 53.85% (21/39) were male, the average age was 21 years (SD ± 1.79), with ages between 17 and 24 years. It is worth mentioning that, of the total number of consumers, 75% (30) had knowledge about the consequences of electronic cigarettes.

Conclusion: what stands out in this study is that the majority of the population surveyed had basic knowledge about the biological repercussions of this controversial habit, however, they still persist in it.
