Abstract

Introduction: Anemia is the most commonly diagnosed hematologic disorder during gestation, so all pregnant women are at risk for anemia during pregnancy. This condition is the result of a wide variety of causes. According to WHO estimates, the most frequent cause of anemia in pregnant women is iron deficiency and, to a lesser extent, folate or vitamin B12 de ficiency.

Objective: To determine the frequency of anemia in pregnant women and the risk factors associated with it, through a sur- vey carried out at the Regional Hospital of Coronel Oviedo in August and September 2022.

Methods: Observational cross-sectional study based on a survey of pregnant women attending the Regional Hospital of Coronel Oviedo.

Results: Of the pregnant women surveyed, 36/110 women suffer from anemia, which corresponds to 32.7%, and 74/110 women do not suffer from anemia, which corresponds to 67.3% of those surveyed. 63.9% of pregnant women suffer from anemia, which corresponds to 67.3%. Of the anemic pregnant women, 63.9% stated that they had more than one pregnancy. The majority of pregnant women said they knew that the main cause of anemia in this period is iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency.

Conclusion: A low frequency of pregnant women with anemia was observed despite the fact that most of them reported having no knowledge of the causes of anemia du ring pregnancy.
