Introduction: The Ponseti method is a non-surgical treatment for clubfoot, a congenital foot deformity. It is based on gentle manipulation of the foot, followed by the application of serial casts to gradually correct the position of the foot. It is one of the most common congenital foot deformities. The lack of data on the state of the art of this phenomenon in Paraguay motivated us to investigate this topic.
Objective: To describe the effectiveness of the Ponseti method in the treatment of clubfoot in the population of Paraguay during the period from January 2021 to June 2024 by recording the percentage of recurrences. Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, crossectional observational study was conducted from January 2021 to June 2024. Sampling was non-probabilistic and based on convenience. Patients from all Fundación Solidaridad locations in Paraguay were included.
Results: Data from 598 patients with idiopathic clubfoot, 85 secondary clubfoot, and 17 postural clubfoot were analyzed. Of the 700 patients reported to have received treatment over a 4-year period, 129 had recurrences, de- monstrating the effectiveness of the Pon- seti method.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the Ponseti method stands out as a minimally invasive and highly effective technique for correcting clubfoot, especially considering that only 18.4% of all patients treated over four years had recurrences.
