Abstract

Introduction: Pathological waste management is an essential component in medical training due to the associated biological and environmental risks.

Methodology: This observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive study describes the perception of knowledge about pathological waste management of medical students. Faculty of Medical Sciences - National University of Asuncion. A simple of 131 students of Descriptive and Topographic Anatomy I, Biology and Histology of Tissues I and Biochemistry, who answered anonymous questionnaires in digital and printed formats, was included in the study.

Results: 51.1% of the students did not know about the management of pathological waste, 51.2% did not receive adequate orientation on safety standards in the handling of this waste; 68% did not participate in courses and/or training programs on the management of pathological waste and 50% of them reported having knowledge of the protocol for the management of pathological waste.

Conclusion: These findings show the need to reinforce both initial and continuous training in the safe management of pathological waste, through the effective implementation of clear protocols and training programs, in order to guarantee safety and  ethical commitment in medical training.
