Acciones de los odontólogos ante la sospecha de maltrato infantil

Introducción: El maltrato infantil es un problema de salud pública mundial; las lesiones bucales y craneofaciales figuran entre sus indicadores más frecuentes y colocan al odontólogo en una posición estratégica para la detección temprana. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar las acciones de los odontólogos de Asunción y Central, Paraguay, ante la sospecha de maltrato infantil.
Materiales y métodos: Estudio descriptivo, de enfoque cuantitativo y corte transversal, en una muestra no probabilística de 86 odontólogos que ejercen en Asunción y Central. Se aplicó un cuestionario autoadministrado en Google Forms (marzo–abril de 2023) sobre datos sociodemográficos, capacitación previa, experiencia y actitudes ante la sospecha de maltrato infantil.
Resultados: Predominó el sexo femenino (79,1 %) y el grupo etario de 40 a 50 años (34 %). El 73 % nunca recibió capacitación para diagnosticar y denunciar casos sospechosos, y el 70 % no sospechó ni presenció nunca un caso; entre quienes sí, la negligencia fue el tipo más frecuente (22 %). El 85 % se declaró en condiciones de denunciar y el 99 % consideró importante un protocolo diagnóstico específico para la odontología.
Conclusión: Los odontólogos de Asunción y Central presentan una actitud favorable hacia la detección y la denuncia del maltrato infantil, pero carecen mayoritariamente de capacitación formal, lo que evidencia una brecha entre disposición y preparación y subraya la necesidad de incorporar contenidos específicos en la formación de pregrado y posgrado en odontología.
