Abstract
Background: Eugenia uniflora (in guarani: Ñangapiry) is a plant known for increasing diuresis and thereby decreasing blood pressure. The aim was to determine the diuretic capacity of E. uniflora extract consumption in wistar rats.
Methods: Experimental study carried out in the Faculty of Medical Sciences in the National University of Asuncion. E. uniflora aqueous extract lyophilized was administered to wistar rats, divided in three groups with doses of 80 mg/kg, 90 mg/ kg and control group. Urine sodium concentration tests were performed before and after administration of the extract.
Results: With the 80 mg/kg dose there was a diuretic effect of 0.96, and with 90 mg/kg it was 1.107. Volume measurement indicated a relation of 1.75:1 between the groups with doses of 90 mg/kg. and 80mg/kg., but between basal urine and the one after the administration of the extract in the 90mg/kg. dose the relations is only of 1:1.03. A greater natriuresis was shown in the 90 mg/kg group (35.8 ± 10.83 in mEq/L), higher than 80 mg/kg (9.0±8.9 mEq/L) and the Control group (9.25 ± 4.25 mEq/L).
Conclusion: A dose of 90 mg/kg compared to the 80 mg/kg dose has increased significantly natriuresis, with a greater diuretic activity with a value of 1.1.
