Abstract

Paraíso leaves are used in the treatment of gingivitis, burns and as antiparasitic in animals. In Paraguay, studies on this species are focused on its insecticidal activity. Therefore, in this study, the bioactive compounds were identified and the antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract of the leaves was evaluated. Phytol (21.27%), α-tocopherol (13.89%), β-caryophyllene (6.47%) and linolenic acid (4.97%) were the major phytoconstituents identified by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). On the other hand, the antioxidant capacity evaluated by 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) inhibition was 42.72 ± 4.26% inhibition at 500 µg.mL-1 of the crude extract, with an IC50 = 662 ± 48 µg.mL-1. These results indicate the presence of bioactive compounds of medicinal interest in the ethanolic extract of M. azedarach leaves. However, the extract showed low uptake of DPPH radicals.
