Mental health in third-year medical students post pandemic COVID-19

Abstract

Introduction: The coronavirus pandemic is the public health problem that had the greatest impact in recent times and due to the alarming numbers of infected and dead reported daily directly influencing the mental health of different populations, which had beginning according to the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020 and ended on May 5, 2023.

Objective: To determine the frequency of anxiety and depression in medical students of a private university during the covid-19 pandemic.

Methodology: The design was cross-sectional analytical observational. The study population consisted of 71 third-year medical students from a private university who agreed to participate in the study. The instrument used to measure anxiety and depression was the Goldberg Anxiety and Depression Scale (GADS) sent by social networks.

Results: Out of 71 participants, 71.83% were female, with a mean age of 22.75 ± 1.73 years. The probability of suffering from anxiety and depression was 64,79% and 67,61% respectively.

Conclusions: The results revealed extremely high figures, considering that more than 64% of the students are likely to suffer from anxiety and almost 88% are likely to suffer from depression. These statistics reveal the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of students in these three years of the covid-19 pandemic.
