Degree of satisfaction and competencies acquired by first-year medical students following a first research experience at the Chair of Biophysics, National University of Asuncion-2018

Abstract

Introduction: During the training of medical students, the development of their research skills is as important as that of their clinical skills, since knowledge about the scientific method and health research can be very useful in medical care. Therefore, scientific research and publication is a very relevant point in the training of a medical student.

Objective: To determine the degree of satisfaction and competences acquired by first year medical students after a first research experience in the Chair of Biophysics.

Material and Method: quasi-experimental study of analytical post-intervention, cross-sectional, non-probabilistic by con- venience. From November to December 2018, at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Saxony branch). Self-administered survey. Results: 109 surveys were included, only from the first year of the Medicine course of Biophysics. The age range was between 18 and 25 years old (20.41±1.37). Of the respondents, 57.8% had no previous knowledge of the subject. 33.94% (37) of the students were satisfied with the skills obtained after the research intervention.

Conclusions: After the intervention the students affirm their satisfaction in possessing basic knowledge for further scientific research and suggest that the university authorities to encourage the presentation of papers at congresses, the writing of research articles and even affirm that the faculty should encourage the opening of research units.
